Biography

Bobby Benson (1922–1983) was a pioneering Nigerian highlife musician and bandleader widely considered one of the founding fathers of Nigerian popular music. Born in Ijora, Lagos, he founded the Bobby Benson Combo in the 1940s and introduced American swing and calypso influences into Nigerian dance band highlife. His clubs and performances helped create the infrastructure of Nigeria's modern music industry.
