D'banj
Biography
D'banj, born Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo on June 9 1980 in Zaria, Kaduna State, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and entertainer who became one of Africa's biggest music stars through his iconic partnership with producer Don Jazzy at Mo'Hits Records. His signature harmonica playing and charismatic stage persona made him one of the most recognisable entertainers on the continent. He released his debut album No Long Thing in 2005, establishing the Mo'Hits sound as a dominant force in Nigerian music. His breakthrough albums The Entertainer (2008) and The entertainer reloaded earned him widespread acclaim, but it was the 2012 single Oliver Twist that catapulted him to genuine global fame. Oliver Twist became the first Nigerian song to chart significantly in the United Kingdom, reaching the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart and earning D'banj a deal with Kanye West's GOOD Music label. He performed at major international festivals including Glastonbury and toured with established global acts. D'banj received the BET Award for Best International Act: Africa in 2011 and 2012, and was named the MTV Africa Music Awards Artist of the Decade. His flamboyant personality and business acumen extended beyond music into entertainment entrepreneurship. Though his partnership with Don Jazzy ended in 2012, both artists went on to remarkable individual careers that redefined the Nigerian music industry. D'banj remains one of the most celebrated figures of the Afrobeats golden era.
