Omah Lay
Biography
Omah Lay, born Stanley Omah Didia on May 19 1997 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who emerged as one of the defining new voices of 2020 with a debut EP that captured the mood of a generation navigating love, uncertainty, and ambition in contemporary Nigeria. He released Get Layd in 2020, a project that contained the sleeper hit You and the deeply atmospheric track Bad Influence, both of which found massive audiences on streaming platforms and social media and established him as a serious artistic prospect. His music blends Afrobeats rhythms with alternative R&B aesthetics and confessional lyrics delivered in a distinctive lower vocal register that conveys emotional weight and vulnerability. His debut album What Have We Done (2023) was his most ambitious statement, produced partly in collaboration with international artists and demonstrating a confident command of his artistic identity. The album received critical acclaim and demonstrated a willingness to be emotionally open in ways that resonated with audiences across multiple continents. Omah Lay was involved in a high-profile incident in Uganda in 2020 when he was arrested following a concert, causing an international uproar that ultimately led to his release after the Nigerian government intervened. The incident paradoxically broadened his profile and demonstrated his growing Pan-African significance. He has collaborated with Justin Bieber on the track Attention (2022), which became his biggest international hit and introduced him to mainstream Western audiences. He remains one of the most promising and artistically distinctive voices of his generation.
